All of Jesus for All the World: Lessons from Luke 5

I would like you to imagine being in the boat with Peter as it is sinking from the overwhelming catch of fish that Jesus had miraculously just provided. Imagine, despite your best efforts all night to catch something, anything, to bring home or take to market, you had come away empty handed, tired and grumpy from a fruitless- or rather fishless, night. Now, suddenly, you see Peter calling to the other boat and it, too, starts to sink as it helps take on the enormous catch of fish.

Peter had seen enough. He saw Jesus heal his mother-in-law (Luke 4:38-39), most likely had heard Him teaching earlier in Luke chapter 4 and saw Him heal many who came to Him that evening. Now, this. Jesus’ Lordship just became even more evident for the soon to be disciple so he drops before the Lord on a pile of fish in his boat, and in humility and conviction exclaims, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8).

Such a display of majesty by Jesus showed Peter at least two things: Who Jesus is and exactly who Peter is. Confession of sin is the only right response. It makes sense that Peter would ask the Lord to go away because what else could a sinful person say in the Presence of the Perfect God? Instead, you hear Jesus’ reassurance and invitation to Peter to follow Him. This is the wonderful and amazing Jesus. He’s the One that we’re commissioned to take to all the world (Matt. 28:18-20).

The world is waiting for all of Jesus,
