Eternity in Our Hearts

He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 4:3b

The Teacher in Ecclesiastes has a good lesson for us today: God has set eternity in our hearts. In so doing, God shows each human that there is something more to life than just the here and now, that there’s something greater than the sum of our individual experiences. I think this also explains the restlessness of some people to accomplish something or be known for something, to leave a lasting impression in the world because life is so fleeting. And while we can’t fathom what He has done from the beginning to the end, He has made Himself known to us in Christ, the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end (Rev. 1:8). Thus when we know Jesus well and see Him at work in our lives, we’re seeing the Father at work as well (John 14:9), because the Father and Jesus are One (John 10:30). Our part then, is to follow Him (John 21:19), even when it doesn’t always make sense.
