His Word is a Lamp: Habakkuk

9/27/2023

I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what He will say to me,
and what I will answer concerning my complaint. Hab. 2:1

When I was in college, I took a special course taught by a professor who had been a psychologist for over 40 years. He regularly used the phrase, “This is the stuff of life” when he referred to what folks faced in their lives and how he journeyed with them through it. I think Habakkuk gives us an example of how to handle “the stuff of life.”

Here’s what I mean:
  • Habakkuk (H) wrestled with the big questions of life. He took them to God for His help and answers (Chapter 1)
  • H engaged in deep dialogue with God. He even made sure to put himself in the place to listen to Him (2:1)
  • H exhorts us that “the righteous live by faith” (2:4)
  • H heard about God’s work and asked God to revive His work in H’s life and times in (3:2)
  • H stated that even if certain circumstances happened, H would still rejoice and trust in God (3: 17-19)
  • H shares with us the source of his ability to rejoice in the Lord in such a way: The Lord was his strength (3:19)

These are the lessons we can learn from an ancient prophet. Which one stands out to you? Which one is speaking to you?

Thankfully, God is so gracious and faithful to speak to His people then and now. What a privilege it is to have God’s Word.

Remember, Jesus is walking through the stuff of life with us!
