His Word is a Lamp: Hebrews

6/5/2024

I can’t believe I didn’t make one of my favorite Bible jokes on Sunday! We were studying the book of Hebrews and I neglected to say, “Did you know that God likes coffee?” The answer is “He–brews”! Oh well, thankfully there will be another opportunity to share that joke some day. However, speaking of Hebrews, while we refer to it as a book, which it is in the Bible, it was originally a sermon letter written to Hebrew believers who were wavering in their faith. So, the author writes to encourage these believers because Jesus really is worth it. In fact, not only is Jesus worth it to hold on to our faith in Him, He’s far, far superior to anything that these Jewish believers would know from the Old Testament.

Here’s my NewLife News weekly List! Jesus is better than:
  • The Angels
  • Moses
  • The Law
  • The Prophets
  • His Covenant is better than the old one
  • He is a superior High Priest and a High Priest forever
  • His Sacrifice is better than the whole Old Testament sacrificial system

His blood is better, pure, and perfect. That’s why only He can cleanse us. No one else can make us clean. (If you were with us on Sunday, this is why I was quoting the worship lyric “Your blood, speaks a better word." If you weren’t with us on Sunday, there’s good news, we’re gathering again this Sunday!)

So, friends, if you are wavering or even if you’re feeling secure in your faith, I urge us (I’m including me in this exhortation): Let us hold on to the hope that is the anchor of our souls, Jesus, our High Priest, who has given us access to God in the Holy of Holies (Heb. 6:19).

How do we hold on to this hope (get ready for list two) which anchors our souls in this crazy life:
  • We pay much closer attention to what we have heard so we don’t drift, 2:1
  • We listen to His voice and don’t harden our hearts when we hear Him, 3:7 & 4:7
  • We leave the elementary doctrines and press into maturity in Jesus, 6:1
  • We draw near to God with the purified heart that Jesus gives us, 10:22
  • We consider how to stir others up in their faith, we keep gathering in His name, we encourage each other and we hold on to our confession in Him, 10:23-25

Dear Friends, hold on to Him and your confession of Him, The Good Shepherd!

Pastor Andy

Questions for reflection and conversation:
  1. What causes you to waver in your faith? What strengthens you in those times?
  2. Do you truly believe that Jesus is better than everyone and everything else? Does your life show this? How does your life reflect that He’s better?
