His Word is a Lamp: Jonah

9/6/2023

Hello fellow Jonahs –
As we reflect on the Book of Jonah, be reminded that this book gives us a view into our own selves and how similar to Jonah we all are – and not for the good reasons.

God is asking us if we believe it is okay for God to love our enemies. Are we excited and genuinely happy when our enemies are loved by God? Reflect on God calling us out to love those we don’t love. Our love for them doesn’t come easy and He wants us to start seeing them how He sees them.

Blessings to you all and may we all be reminded that at one time, we too were God’s enemies.
Pastor Kyle

Questions for Reflection:
Here are some questions to ponder. Take some time, have the Book of Jonah open and go through these questions on your own or in a group.
  • What was Jonah running from? Why?
  • Are you ever tempted to feel that some sin you committed in the past (or continue to struggle with) puts you beyond the reach of God’s grace? What encouraging news does the book of Jonah have for you? How can you encourage others who struggle with the same temptation?
  • Where do you go to “flee from God” (could be a place, a group of people or person, computer, food, video games, alcohol, vacation dreams, fantasies, etc.)?
  • What “idolatry” was Jonah struggling with? Read Jonah 2:8. Describe what this passage is telling us.
  • How does the book of Jonah expose our own self-righteousness, feelings of superiority and hypocrisy?
  • Do you view God as described in Jonah 4:2? Why or why not?
  • The book ends with a question about God’s concerns (4:10). We don’t know how Jonah answered this question but what really matters is how we answer the question? How would you answer it?
