His Word is a Lamp: Malachi

Y’all, we've achieved a very significant milestone. We’ve reached the end of our journey through the Old Testament! As we said on Sunday, that’s an Old Testament badge for each of us!

Our OT journey concluded with the book of Malachi. Malachi, which means messenger, was God’s messenger whom He called and used to challenge Israel on attitudes that were not pleasing to the Lord and were leading to bad consequences for them.

At the same time, there are aspects of the book that are very encouraging.

Take a look at these:

• God will send a forerunner who would make the people ready for God’s appearance. God accomplished this through John the Baptist. “I will send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me." 3:1
• It is God’s unchanging nature and character that preserved His people then and us now in Christ, not because of any good works or anything done by us! “For I the Lord God do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob are not consumed.” 3:6
• God honors those who fear Him!  A book of remembrance was written and kept before the Lord of those who feared His Name. 3:16-18
• God will bring healing through Jesus to those who honor and fear Him. The sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings for those who fear Him. 4:2
• He will send Elijah to return the hearts of the fathers to the children and the children to the fathers. (4:5-6 ) In Matthew 17:11-13, Jesus told His disciples that Elijah had come and the people didn’t recognize him. Then the disciples understood that Jesus was telling them John the Baptist fulfilled Malachi’s prophecy. 

As much as Malachi calls out Israel for their hard-hearted, lackluster response to honoring God, God in His unchanging kindness, still made promises to His people. And He always follows through!

Let’s be sure to pay close attention to God’s messenger and keep turning our hearts to Jesus.
