Lent with the Psalms: Finding Jesus in Ancient Prayers

4/9/2025

Psalm 18 is the song David sang in celebration of God’s saving him from his strong enemies. This Psalm is rooted in Exodus 15 where Moses sings to God after He rescued the Israelites from Egypt and Pharaoh, who was in hot pursuit of the nation as they fled their captors. While these two situations are specific to Moses, Israel, David, and his army, they speak of a truth that expands way beyond their situations: God is a God of salvation.

In their situations, God rescued and freed His people and made a way for them. That’s greater truth points ahead to when God would send His Son to earth to rescue His people and make a way back to the Father. That’s why Jesus said of Himself that He is The Way, John 14:6. He’s our God given, Divine Way-Maker.

For those of you who know Jesus, we have much cause to celebrate in this saving knowledge of Him. For any of you who have not yet welcomed Jesus into your life, I want to humbly share with you that Jesus is the only name given on earth by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). Even before the Earth or anything was brought into existence at Creation, it was God’s plan of salvation for Jesus to come on His rescue mission to buy us back from death, forgive us and give us a new life. Call me crazy but I think that’s worth singing about!

Can I get an Amen?

Questions for reflection and conversation:
  • Share a time God made a way for you that you’ll never forget. Don’t worry about it having to be a big story, He meets us in lots of different ways.
  • Is there something where you’re still waiting for Him to make a way for you? Is this something you have/can share with someone trusted and close to you who can pray with you and for you about this? Is this something for which I can join you in praying? Please feel free to email me (Pastor Andy) to share this prayer request and I’ll be praying.
  • What’s your song of salvation? When did you meet Jesus as Savior?
