Lent with the Psalms: Finding Jesus in Ancient Prayers

Psalm 23
Ah, Psalm 23. It’s as familiar and comforting as your mom’s (or grandmother’s) apple pie. We know what it says, many of us have it memorized, and surely 😀, we have it down pat. But, what do we do with the image of Jesus working hard to get His sheep to the still waters? Or, what do we do with the picture of Jesus leading us on ancient and well-established paths of walking with Him that give Him the glory and purpose? We go with it!

We listen to Him because the sheep know the Shepherd’s voice (John 10:3-5), and we walk in the ways He leads us in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are His sheep (Ps. 23:1) and the privilege He gives us in being His is that He goes with us, even in the darkest of times of our lives, and never leaves us. Instead, He goes with us so that He can guide us, protect us, and just so He can plain old be with us. Yes, He wants to be with US!

So, let me see, He’s our Shepherd:

He provides for us
He passionately is getting us to the living waters
He refreshes us and brings us back to Him
He leads us on how to live
He has a place for us and not only that, welcomes us
He gives bountifully of Himself

Yes, I think we can all safely say that His goodness and mercy are following us, both now and always. That’s why He’s called the Good Shepherd!

Now, let’s get walking with Him!
