Spiritual Maturity

9/23/2026

Brothers and Sisters, I wish this was a simple process that was immediate, but it is not. To become the men and women God created us to be takes effort, time, and sacrifice. There is a huge difference between a Jesus following Christian and a cultural Christian. Which are you? Maybe a better question is Why? Why do you attend church? Why call yourself a Christian? The “why” should lead us down a heart journey of who Jesus, really, is in your life.

A cultural Christian is
  • content with complacency and going through motions
  • taking every step of faith in the footprints of someone else
  • not fully understanding where the path leads
  • just engaging in a game of follow the leader
  • doing the same thing over and over with no desire to build a relationship with Jesus
  • Yet, when asked, they will declare they are a believer in Jesus. They will agree to basic ideas of Christianity, that Jesus is the Son of God, here to save humanity from sin and crush evil. Remember, even the demons know that.

Knowledge is helpful but it is not all that God asks of us. God asks for us to build a relationship with Him and to let the Holy Spirit lead us on a moment-by-moment basis- in all our big and small decisions. He wants us to see Him in the world around us, in the faces of people we see, and to see His hand at work everywhere. He wants us to breath Him in and know that every breath is a gift from God.

To become spiritually mature we need to take care of our souls. We must desire God’s Word as a newborn desires pure milk. John begins his gospel with “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” Let us desire God and The Word daily, multiple times a day and experience it. Let God’s Word begin to shape how we see the world, people, circumstances, the Spirit and life.

Scripture has the power to change our lives. It can change us instantaneously and it can gradually change us – helping us move towards a stronger relationship with Jesus. So brothers and sisters, you have two choices:

to be a stagnant lake going through the motions of mediocracy and having no life to your relationship with Jesus. Living a life that brings little to no joy – disconnected from others and just checking off the box of “going to church” – or –
to open your Bibles, with an expectation that the Holy Spirit will speak through God’s Word, and read. To pick up your Bibles daily (or listening to the Bible) with a heart to hear from God knowing that you are being changed from the inside out.

Isaiah 55:10-11

10“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven

and do not return there but water the earth,

making it bring forth and sprout,

giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

11 so shall my Word be that goes out from my mouth;

it shall not return to me empty,

but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,

and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

Blessings,
Kyle
