Spiritual Practices: Worship & Celebration

Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous; Praise befits the upright. Ps. 33:1

The Psalmist is correct. Praise is fitting for the upright because it’s a good and right response to the Lord God, Who is worthy (Rev. 4:11). It’s an interesting thing to note that worship is so important, that in the Old Testament, King Jehoshaphat sent musicians into battle ahead of the army, in response to the Lord’s promise of deliverance.

It’s a fascinating story that should encourage our hearts (2 Chron. 20:21-23). They took God at His promise. They knew Him and His character, so they went forward praising Him. God did everything He had promised, not because they were worshipping Him, but because He is faithful. And because of that, they gave Him praise and so can we! That’s why praise befits the upright: it honors God.

That’s also why the spiritual practices of worship and celebration are so central in our relationship with Him. These practices extol the wonders of God and His grace to us in Christ Jesus. They also serve as a reminder to our hearts of His goodness, kindness, and loving faithfulness. Let’s admit it, we need those reminders daily. So, as I shared in my sermon on Sunday, below are just a few suggestions to help us worship personally. Let these be a stepping-off point for you and add the ways that you discover that help you delight yourself in Him (Ps. 37:4).

• Meditate: Ps. 1, 39, 63
• Preach to your own soul: Ps. 42
• Practice His Presence: Ps. 16:11
• Engage in Acts of Devotion: Mark 14:3-9

He is worthy!
