The Holy Spirit

I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity, he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
Jesus in Luke 11:8, NIV

Here we see Jesus commanding boldness in how we should pray. This isn’t just any boldness, it’s shameless audacity that He’s commending to us! God loves our bold praying in Christ’s name (see Heb. 4:16). To some, this can feel counterintuitive and somehow disrespectful. There’s no such mention in this passage of these things, but there is a caveat to this teaching. Jesus isn’t telling us to demand riches, etc. from God, but He does tell us that the Father delights in giving the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13).

Jesus teaches two parables in this short passage (Luke 11:5-13), explicitly so that we will ask confidently for more and more of the Holy Spirit.  The Father’s giving more of the Holy Spirit is so that we will have the life of Christ within us, and that the Holy Spirit will teach us, guide us into the truth, and glorify Jesus in our lives. So let’s ask for more of Him in our lives!
