Total Renovation in Christ

Earlier this summer, I happened to watch part of a home makeover show. Yes, if you’re wondering, I happened to be in a doctor’s waiting room! Part of the renovation was a new bathroom, bedroom, sitting area, etc. When the woman who owned the house saw the new bathroom, she said, “Finally, I feel like a new person.” That statement should catch the attention of those of us who know Christ. It’s Jesus who can give her a new life, not a new bathroom. We are not called to go and make new bathrooms in all nations, but disciples (Matt. 28:19-20).

That means people who have a real and deepening relationship with Jesus are to share His life giving message. This life giving message, to be sure, has to have a transformative effect in our own lives, both to be willing to go and for others to see Christ in us. In fact, this grace of Jesus ought to not only change us but our relationships with others as can be seen in Eph. 2:11-22.

The Spirit is weaving us together so as to be a dwelling place for God (2:22). The requisite for this weaving to occur is that we know Christ and that He brings a unity to us in our knowledge of Him. We want unity in our homes, right? We don’t want the kitchen floor to be broken up so that we don’t fall into the basement. We want our pipes to be joined together well so there’s no leak. The same is true for us, the Household of God. This all comes from new life in Jesus, not a home makeover, no matter how great the bathroom may be.
