Worship - More Than a Song

Just as God created different people with different personalities and characteristics, we all have different styles of worship that we prefer. What does that mean for us? We need to know ourselves well enough to know what style of worship fits who we are. and we need to be in sync with God to know what style He is asking us to try.

In his book, Sacred Pathways, Gary Thomas talks about nine pathways through which people connect with God (nature, learning, tradition, asceticism, caregiving, sensation, enthusiastic worship, social justice, and quiet prayer). The pathways by which I connect easiest with God may be completely opposite the ones that ware meaningful to you. ALL are important, but we differ on which pathway or method we prefer. It's especially helpful to know your preferred pathway during times of stress or when you feel your time is limited.

As you look over the results, I want you to take two things to heart.

Look at your top two scores and know that when your bucket is empty or you are limited on time and energy, this is where you need to go.
Look at your lowest two scores and be intentional about how to make it a part of your spiritual growth. Give yourself grace knowing these lower scores mean it might take more time to connect with God – but it is still important to do.

I love to be in nature – I can connect with God so quickly when I am walking in the woods, sitting by a lake or even in my backyard looking at birds or the clouds passing by. I know when I have limited time and energy, time in nature will help me feel rejuvenated with God.

I also know that I score a little lower as an intellect. That means that when I have more time (when I choose to make more time), I need to sit down and study the Word – not because I have a sermon or lesson to prepare for, but just to spend time with God studying His Word, looking up things I don’t know and soaking up God with my mind.

NewLife, the time we spend with God needs to touch all aspects of our lives holistically – mind, body, spirit, emotions, etc. God wants all of us, not just the parts of us that are easy or feel comfortable.

If you are not a person who dances, turn on some music at home and move. If you are not a nature person, go for a walk and intentionally look at God’s creation and think about God.

Continue growing deeper in how you worship and adore God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit so that your worship is more than a song.
