Your Word is a Lamp: 1st & 2nd Kings

3/22/2023

What a quick journey we had through 1 & 2 Kings on Sunday! There are many events and many things that are recorded in those books, so I encourage you to read through them if you haven’t done so before. There are two applications I want to point out here:
  • No matter the circumstances, God fulfills His promises and works things together for good.
Throughout the period of the kings, there were good kings and bad kings as we noted. Some did a great job, following the Lord and walking in His ways, while others were evil, and not only departed from the ways of the Lord themselves, but led the people astray. In reading through 1 & 2 Kings, one might wonder what kind of good God could work through all of that mess. However, we see ultimately that these kings show us the need for a good king. It also shows us that through the line of Judah (David’s lineage), God faithfully kept His covenant with David and gave him an heir in Jesus Christ, who will be on the throne forever. Sometimes we might wonder as we look at things in our lives, “How could this all work out?” That’s where faith comes in, and we trust that God will work all things for our good and His glory, even if we don’t see it now.
  • The prophetic role belongs to the church now.
In Kings, we also saw the rise of the prophets, such as Elijah and Elisha. These two had amazing ministries, did miracles through the power of the Lord, and called the nation back to the Lord. While the role of the prophet does not exist as it did in that day, the church still has the prophetic role to call people back to the Lord and to know Him for salvation. Our calling as a church, the body of Christ, is not to call people to the right politics, the right behavior, or the right rules, but to Christ Himself. Thankfully, He’s given us His Holy Spirit that we may have His power in this prophetic role in the church!

May He fill us with His Spirit today so we can walk with Him!

Blessings!
