“I am the Resurrection and the Life….
Do you believe this?”
This question Jesus posed to Martha still echoes through the years down to us. He’s the Resurrection and the Life. Do we believe this?
Here’s the context: Martha’s brother, Lazarus, had died and had been buried for four days. Martha and her sister, Mary, had sent word to Jesus that Lazarus was sick. Yet, Jesus waited before He came to them. He knew Lazarus was going to die. But, He also knew that this would not end in death and that God would be glorified in what Jesus was about to do. This had to be excruciating for Martha and Mary to wait and not know what Jesus would do. When He came to town, Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead! Now, that’s bringing glory to God and showing Himself to be the Resurrection!
Just before He called Lazarus out of the tomb, Jesus asked the question to Martha again, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” I’m thinking that if Jesus asked this question twice, He thought it was important. I’m also thinking that He meant what He asked of Martha, and of us. How we answer His questions and how we believe, will determine everything. Do you believe?
